ISRSE-40 – Student Support Packages Criteria

Purpose of the Grant

The funding is intended to support new professionals in attending ISRSE-40 by covering their registration fees. The objective is to foster diversity and inclusion, prioritize engagement from underrepresented regions, and support the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) professionals.

Please note: Travel and accommodation costs are not covered under this grant and must be secured separately by the applicants.

Eligibility Criteria

For ESA Funding (Europe-Focused)

  1. Citizenship/Residence: Applicants must be citizens or residents of European countries.
  2. Field of Expertise: Must have a demonstrable background in Earth Observation, remote sensing, or related disciplines.
  3. Career Stage: Defined as a “new professional,” with less than five years of experience post-graduation.
  4. Abstract Submission: Submission of an abstract to the ISRSE-40 conference, highlighting innovative work or research in EO.
  5. Independent Travel Support: Applicants must independently secure funding for travel and accommodation.

For NASA Funding (Priority for Central and South America)

  1. Citizenship/Residence: Preference is given to applicants from Central and South America, though exceptional applications from other regions will also be considered.
  2. Field of Expertise: Must have a demonstrable background in Earth Observation, remote sensing, or related disciplines.
  3. Career Stage: Defined as a “new professional,” with less than five years of experience post-graduation.
  4. Abstract Submission: Submission of an abstract to the ISRSE-40 conference, showcasing innovative contributions to EO.
  5. Independent Travel Support: Applicants must independently secure funding for travel and accommodation.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the following:

  1. Relevance of Abstract (40%)
    • Alignment with ISRSE-40 themes, such as climate resilience, sustainable resource management, biodiversity monitoring, or urban sustainability.
    • Innovation and impact of the proposed work.
    • Priority will be given to abstracts demonstrating alignment with the SDGs and themes of ISRSE-40, such as climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15), and clean water and sanitation (SDG 6).
  1. Diversity and Inclusion (25%)
    • Geographic representation, with priority for Central and South America under NASA funding and European applicants under ESA funding.
    • Gender, ethnic, and sectoral diversity to foster an inclusive environment.
  1. Professional Merit (20%)
    • Demonstrated potential and achievements in EO-related fields.
    • Quality of prior academic or professional contributions.
  1. Justification and Motivation (15%)
    • Compelling reasons for attending ISRSE-40 and expected benefits for professional growth.

Application Requirements

Applicants must provide:

  1. A completed application form (to be provided on the ISRSE-40 website).
  2. A copy of the submitted abstract.
  3. A CV detailing educational background, work experience, and relevant accomplishments.
  4. A short statement (up to 500 words) outlining:
    • How their participation aligns with ISRSE-40 goals.
    • The expected impact of their attendance on their career and their organization/region.
  5. Proof of nationality or residence.

Application and Selection Process

  1. Application Submission: All applications must be submitted via the ISRSE-40 website by the deadline.
  2. Committee Review: Applications will be reviewed by the ISRSE-40 organizing committee. Neither ESA nor NASA will be involved in the selection process, per grant terms.
  3. Notification of Results: Successful applicants will be notified at least six weeks before the conference. All supported participants must attend the New Professionals Forum and at least one thematic session to maximize their engagement with the ISRSE-40 community.
