Senior Engagement Officer
NASA
Lawrence Friedl serves as the Senior Engagement Officer for the Earth Science Division at NASA Headquarters. He directs Division-wide engagement efforts with an emphasis on strategic partnerships across public and private sectors, including philanthropic and non-profit organizations. Among many responsibilities, Lawrence serves as a Co-Chair of the interagency U.S. Group on Earth Observations and a Co-Chair of an initiative on the Sustainable Development Goals with the international Group on Earth Observations. From 2009-2023, he served as Director of the NASA Applied Sciences Program, leading efforts to advance innovative and practical applications of Earth science. In addition, he worked at the US Environmental Protection Agency, and he served as a Space Shuttle Flight Controller in NASA’s Mission Control Center. Finally, Lawrence is particularly interested in the reward structures incentivizing scientists to connect their work with users and communities to support decision making and expand societal benefits.
NASA explores the unknown in air and space, innovates for the benefit of humanity, and inspires the world through discovery. For more than 65 years, NASA has made the seemingly impossible, possible. At its 20 centers and facilities across the country and with U.S. commercial companies and international partners, NASA leads studying Earth science, including climate, our Sun, solar system, and the larger universe. We conduct cutting-edge research to advance technology and aeronautics. We operate the world’s leading space laboratory, the International Space Station, and will establish a sustainable and strong exploration presence on the Moon this decade through the Artemis campaign.
